United Airlines’ app now offers a more enjoyable way to spend your airport free time (or wherever you are), by letting you fly and land a Boeing 787 "Dreamliner".
SkyTale Studios developed this flight simulation game for United Airlines with a target package size of just 20MB.
At the end we squeezed a whole F-Sim like simulation of a Boeing 787 into 16MB, including San Franciso International Airport and suroundings like the San Franciso bay and city with buildings and bridges.
Choose between tutorials and final or full landing approaches. The latter are divided into three different difficulty levels: Beginner, advanced and expert.
The games’ interface abstracts out controls like throttles, elevators, ailerons, and flaps. Your task is to control the 787’s pitch, roll, and yaw by tilting your phone or tablet to keep the jet on the glide path to SFO’s runways.
After some training as a beginner try the other landing scenarios, from daylight to night, calm wind to gust, and starting heights up to 11.000 feet.
Follow the directions of the ATC (air traffic control) and tower, recorded by real United Airlines employees to get the “787 heavy” safely to the ground.
The challenge is not just to land the Dreamliner in a way the passengers and cabin crew survive: Get better scores by practicing.
The softer the wheels touch the runway, and the closer the plane is to the center line, the higher your final score will be. Watch the landing afterwards in a replay video if you like.
